Best places for Winter sun holidays
Where is hot this Winter?
The government has relaxed entry rules for vaccinated travellers and now there are more countries on the green list to chose from.
So where are the best Winter sun destinations, with the least restrictions and the best weather? Here are a list of the best places for your relaxing winter break in the sun.
I have kept the list fairly small as I didn’t want to include places where you have to quarantine on arrival. Plus I wanted destinations with direct flights to keep things as simple as possible and places where you can enjoy sand, sea and lots of sun.
A long time favourite for winter sun. With winter high’s of around 22-25oC and just a four hour flight from the UK, the Canary Islands have a lot to offer for a Winter sun break.
Lanzarote tends to be the warmest of the islands but to be honest there isn’t too much difference.
There are some really lovely luxury hotels now in the Canaries and plenty of smaller boutique style ones have been popping up. Plus the islands have plenty to do and see if you don’t want to just relax by the pool. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are great for golf and hiking the mountains and volcanoes. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are best know for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The Canaries are a great place for all but especially well catered for families, with lots of family activities and tours available and plenty of family friendly hotels with kids clubs.
At the moment fully vaccinated passengers will not need any tests to enter which makes the Canaries even more desirable for a short Winter sun break.
Dubai has recently become a hugely popular Winter sun destination. With daytime high’s sometimes reaching 30oC it is one of the hottest places you can get to on a shortish flight. Emirates and BA have several direct flights a day from various UK airports. The flight is about 7 hours so not too bad.
There is always plenty to do in Dubai. Theme parks, golf, scuba diving, desert adventures and great shopping are just some of the things available. There are plenty of sandy beaches to enjoy and some really great waterparks. Plus some of the Worlds most amazing luxury hotels where you can enjoy some serious pampering.
If you plan visiting Dubai you will need to obtain a negative PCR test result first.
Egypt offers average daytime high’s in winter from 22-26oC and is only five hours by direct flight from the UK. There are currently direct flights to Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. I personally prefer the smaller resorts of El Gouna and Soma Bay as they have a more upmarket feel. They are both a short drive from Hurghada airport.
Egypt is a great option for amazing value all-inclusive beach resorts. Great for scuba diving and snorkelling, the Red Sea resorts are now home to a huge range of luxury beach resorts with a wide range of facilities and a lot of them have their own house reef. So Great beaches, lots to do in and out of the water and of course plenty of history and culture to enjoy, if that’s you thing.
Families are well catered for here and most of the large resorts have lots of family facilities and kids activities. Some have their own waterparks. There are also adults only and couple friendly hotels if you prefer to chill in a calmer environment.
You will still need a negative PCR test to enter Egypt but then there are no restrictions or quarantine after that.
A visit to the Caribbean means a bit longer on a plane, so 9 hours, give or take. There are lots of direct routes from UK airports but at the moment Antigua still looks to be the best bet, having the least strict entry rules of any Caribbean country.
So if you are looking for a properly hot destination this Winter, the Caribbean is a great option and the nearest one with regular temperatures over 30oC.
Each Caribbean island has different entry requirements and some can be quite restrictive. Antigua only requires a negative PCR test result for vaccinated arrivals. You will need to show your vaccine status and stay in one of the designated covid approved hotels – which includes most of the good ones and Antigua has some of the best luxury hotels in the Caribbean, if not the World!
Barbados is another good option with direct flights to the amazing beaches and luxurious hotels of this beautiful and friendly island. You will need to take a PCR test to enter the country, although then also take one on arrival, then stay in your hotel until you get the results (usually within 24 hours).
So if you want properly hot temperatures and a beautiful tropical location with white sand, palm fringed beaches, great food, luxurious hotels and a laid back vibe, then the Caribbean could be the place for you.
With average highs in Winter nudging 30oC you will see plenty of hot sunny days in Mauritius. There are direct flights from the UK which will get you there in just under 12 hours but the long flight is well worth it.
Mauritius is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, although not just a pretty beach destination. It offers a varied landscape of rugged coastline with crashing waves, quiet secluded coves with white sand beaches, wild mountains and lush valleys. It is an island steeped in history, with a diverse mix of cultures from colonial European, to African, Indian and even Chinese.
The island is great for sports with some fabulous golf courses and lots of great scuba dive sites, as well as really good conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. There are also some great hikes to be had in the national parks and plenty of cycling opportunities.
There are some really great luxury hotels around the island, with something for everyone, from large family beach style resorts sitting on pristine white sand beaches, to small intimate boutique hotels, perfect for a romantic break or honeymoons plus some truly stunning and luxurious private villas.
Visitors must show they are fully vaccinated and also get a PCR test to enter Mauritius.
The Maldives is possibly the Worlds most beautiful holiday destination. Direct flights can get you to paradise in just over 12 hours.
The Maldives doesn’t ever get cold so you are guaranteed temperatures well into the 30’s. November and December can see a bit of rain but its that lovely warm tropical rain and only short bursts each day. Go in January, February or March and you will enjoy hot and dry weather.
if you have seen photos of amazing tropical island resorts, surrounded by azure lagoons in the middle of the ocean, chances are you were looking at the Maldives. Over a thousand paradise islands in the Indian Ocean. Some of the best islands are home to amazing luxury retreats, with white sand, palm fringed beaches, World class spa’s and luxurious facilities and accommodations. Still as popular as every with couples and honeymooners looking to stay in the famous stilted overwater villas over the crystal clear lagoons, or the private bungalows right on the beach. There are now plenty of island resorts that offer family friendly options with family villas with slides, lots of fun activities and some resorts now offer kids clubs.
The Maldives is a true paradise and a bucket list destination that we should all have the pleasure of visiting at least once in our lives. At the moment everyone needs to get a negative PCR test to enter but there is no quarantine after that.
